Transient

Project type

Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 cm

Date

Jul 2024

Location

San Juan, PR.

This self-portrait, divided into three sections, explores the theme of detachment and the transient nature of emotions, illustrating the journey of moving through and ultimately confronting these feelings.

TOP SECTION
The gold background symbolizes a fleeting sense of detachment.

MIDDLE SECTION
This part reveals my face from the eyebrows to the jawline, with me smoking a blunt. The pink smoke, curling from the blunt, represents the intangible and illusive, much like pink itself, which isn’t a color on the light spectrum.

The burgundy background conveys the deeper, often painful layers of detachment. The act of smoking and the pink smoke illustrate the temporary escape from reality and the ephemeral nature of such avoidance.

BOTTOM SECTION
The olive green background represents grounding and the eventual necessity of facing one’s emotions. The visible hand suggests the inevitability of returning to oneself and the world, despite attempts to detach.

The painting as a whole captures the cyclical process of detachment and re-engagement. The inicial sense of detachment, symbolized by the top section, transitions into a deeper, more introspective phase in the middle section, where the temporary relief of avoidance is portrayed. Finally, the bottom section signifies the return to reality and the acceptance of the need to face and process these feelings. Through this self-portrait, I convey the message that while detachment can be a temporary refuge, one must ultimately confront and move through their emotions to find true understanding and peace.
